Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

A large number of dogs are known to eat grass, and a common question is why do they do this?

It is not exactly known why dogs eat grass but some theories include:

  • Eating grass can act as a way to purge the stomach of something causing an upset. However, not all dogs who eat grass will vomit afterwards.

  • The dog is missing some vitamins or minerals. Dogs are primarily carnivores but would also consume the stomach contents of their prey, which would contain small amounts of vegetation.

  • To add fibre to their diets.

  • Because the dog enjoys eating grass.

Is it safe for dogs to eat grass?

The major concern is if the grass has been treated with a herbicide or fertiliser which could cause poisoning in your dog.
